Search Update

Posted on Tuesday, October 4, 2016

Dear Church Family,

We thank you immensely for your prayers surrounding the search for our next senior pastor. Please continue to pray for our church and our next senior pastor.

Details about the call were printed in the October Link, and are restated below.

Blessings,
Drew Crain, David Ellis, Kim McCall, Jeff Pewitt, Randy Shults, Emerson Wiles.

Starting Sunday, October 23, we will have a church-wide prayer vigil. This is an important step in discerning God’s will for this upcoming vote. The prayer vigil is being organized by Ken Altom. Please see the article on the front page of the October newsletter entitled “Great Day in the Morning” for more information. The name of the pastoral candidate will be released that Sunday as well so that people can listen to online sermons.

On Wednesday, October 26, there will be a town hall meeting with the search team in the FLC gym at 6pm. The team will answer your questions and share more information about the candidate. Childcare will be available in the Kids’ Park for children in third grade and younger.

The candidate will be with us on Saturday, October 29, and Sunday, October 30. We hope you will stop by the gym during one of the two Meet and Greet sessions on Saturday. The first session is from 9:30 to 11:30am, and the second is from 2 – 4pm.

On Sunday, October 30th, the candidate will preach in the worship service in view of a call.

Then FBCM church members will vote by ballot at the end of the service. Once the vote is tallied, the team will notify the congregation of the result by automated phone call.

The countdown is on!  It’s time to prepare our hearts to make this very important decision.

Dear Church Family,

First, thank you for your continuing prayers for us, this search process, and our next senior pastor. Your prayers are felt.

We have been very busy this summer reviewing resumes and listening to sermons of a diversity of pastors, ages 25 to 65 from all over the country. Mid-summer, we met and every one of us had the same person at the top of our list; while there were many skilled and qualified pastors on our lists, it was our unanimous discernment that one candidate was a perfect fit for leading FBC Maryville. As we have said to each other many times, we are certain that “this is a God thing.”

Since that mid-summer meeting, we have had numerous conversations with the candidate via telephone, email, FaceTime, and recently an in-person meeting with him and his wife. Soon, we will continue this process with a series of background checks.

Please pray for God’s continuing guidance in this process.

Blessings,
Drew Crain, David Ellis, Kim McCall, Jeff Pewitt, Randy Shults, Emerson Wiles.

The Senior Pastor Search Team would like to start by thanking you for your prayers and encouragement. We have definitely felt them and know God is guiding us as we continue the process of finding the person that God has for First Baptist. There is a strong presence of the Holy Spirit that has created a harmony and commitment to serve the Lord with our actions to complete this task.

The Senior Pastor Search Team has been hard at work. We have met numerous times since February, over eight meetings, as well as constant e-mails. We have reviewed over one-hundred resumes. They have come electronically from the church web-page, contact with several state Baptist associations, members' contact with various seminaries, regular mail and members' contact with individuals.

We individually and as a team have viewed numerous online sermons. There are some outstanding pastors in this country and God has the right person for us. We are currently in a period of discernment. We feel strongly that God’s hand is guiding the process.

We request that you continue praying for God’s will to be done, knowing First Baptist Church will be blessed as we seek to glorify His Kingdom in all that we do.

Your brothers and sister in Christ,
Drew Crain

First, thank you for your consistent prayers for us, for the process, and for the man that God will ultimately reveal to us. The single most important part of the entire process is prayer, and we ask for you to continually lift up the people, the process, and the outcome.

In our work, we have made contact with the Tennessee Baptist Convention, other state conventions, seminaries, and individuals who know pastors who might be a fit for FBC Maryville. At this time, we have probably looked at over one hundred resumes and listened to sermons online. We have winnowed and sifted and reduced the numbers, and there are several people we want to get to know better and hear more from and about. Please do not take this to mean that we are close to an end result, but just to mean that we are searching diligently.

We ask that you also be in prayer about the financial needs that will accompany the finding of a new pastor. Pray about your part in helping meet those needs and for our entire church as we take the responsibility of bringing God’s man and his family to a new place of service.

Your friends in Christ,
David Ellis
Randy Shults

Beginning the Search

Posted Tuesday, April 26, 2016

What an exciting time to be part of First Baptist Maryville! We have so many things to look forward to in the coming years. We are so blessed and thankful for the transitional foundation that Emerson and Mary Wiles have constructed in the last few years.

First of all, I want to say how thankful we are for the encouragement and support we as a pastor search team have received so far. We covet your prayers as you can imagine the amount of time, energy, and prayer it takes for this search. I want to express the love and passion these search team members have for this church. It is incredible for me to see and hear, and we know our church is made up of wonderful godly people.

We, as a search team, have named David Ellis as our chairman. David, Kim McCall, Drew Crain, Randy Shults, and I make up this team. Please continue to pray for these team members. You will be receiving updates from each team member in the next several weeks and months regarding the search.

On our church website, you will see a pastor job description that we have developed through this team. After much discernment and prayer over our church identity document, this is the type of person that we feel this church would be looking for in our senior pastor and leader.

After several meetings in the last eight weeks, we have finally come to the point where we will be accepting recommendations and receiving resumes. Resumes will be accepted by email through our church website, as you may have already noticed. We will be reaching out to several state Baptist Association's as well as the Southern Baptist Convention and many seminaries across the country.

As we start this phase of receiving resumes, please continue to be in prayer for wisdom, unity, and love for this search team. Pray for us as a church body to seek God Himself and trust Jesus as the head of this church. Pray also for our next pastor to know God's direction for him and us at First Baptist Maryville.
