Our Mission and Purpose

Who We Are and Why We Exist

Our mission is to magnify God by mobilizing a gospel-centered community through worship, discipleship, and missions.

Explanation of Terms

“Magnify God” - There is no greater purpose of creation than to joyfully celebrate and make known the glory of God. The Bible explains: “For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen” (Romans 11:36). Moreover, the Bible also reminds us that “whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

“Mobilizing” - After the resurrection, Jesus commissioned His disciples into the world (Matthew 28:19-20). The book of Acts records how the disciples began in Jerusalem but spread the message of Jesus all across the world (Acts 1:8). The idea of mobilization is that we will equip disciples to recognize they are the personal ambassadors of Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:20). Likewise, as the people of First Baptist Maryville, we see our primary duty as that of being on a mission with and for God.

“Gospel-Centered” - What is the gospel? The Bible says that the gospel is of first importance (1 Corinthians 15). According to Scripture, the gospel is literally the “good news” that Jesus Christ is Lord. Thus, the gospel is the “good news” of Jesus Christ’s perfect life, death for sinners, resurrection from the dead, and ascension to the Father. While repentance and faith are the evidences of salvation, as a “gospel-centered” community we are about more than helping people make a decision for Christ; we are committed to making disciples of Christ who live out His Lordship in all spheres of life.

“Community” - Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment – “just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another” (John 13:34). In fact, Jesus maintained that love for one another is the distinguishing mark of true discipleship. Life is not meant to be lived alone, but in real community and fellowship with one another, and as one unified body of Christ. To this end, we are committed to being a loving, revitalizing faith community at First Baptist Maryville, deeply and sacrificially pursuing relationships of social support with one another, and reaching out to those outside of our community with the good news of Christ.
